Arthritis finger pain can be especially debilitating because there are 27 bones in each hand and they're connected, of course, by a network of joints. From birth, these joints are covered with a connective tissue known as cartilage, which makes it easier for the joints to move more smoothly. As we age, the cartilage sometimes wears away, and arthritis results. In its earliest stages, arthritis finger pain feels likes a dull, burning sensation: like the type of pain you feel after an active day when you've used your hands more than usual. Pain in the early stages of arthritis may come and go. As more cartilage wears away, arthritis feels worse. Two types of arthritis are likely to cause pain in the fingers and thumbs. Osteoarthritis, in which cartilage wears down over time and causes inflammation of the joints, swelling, pain, and stiffness. Rheumatoid arthritis, which is a chronic inflammatory disorder affecting many tissues and organs, but principally the joints. When you have osteoarthritis, you typically develop lumps or nodules around the knuckles of the fingers. These knuckles can become enlarged, swollen, stiff and painful. When you have rheumatoid arthritis, you're likely to have the same symptoms as osteoarthritis. But deformities in the fingers and hands are more complex. Fingers may shift from their normal position, and even drift away from the thumb. Here's how to tell if finger pain is arthritis. Joints may become swollen with overuse. Stiffness can make it harder to move or bend your fingers Fingers can feel warm to the touch, which may be caused by swelling You may feel numbness and tingling in your fingers Some people may also experience weakness in the hands and fingers, making it difficult to open jars or grasp objects. You may hear audible grating or grinding noises when you move or use your fingers Some types of arthritis, such as psoriatic arthritis, may cause a flaky and scale-like rash that occurs along with swelling. Some people with psoriatic arthritis may experience a change in the appearance of their nails. If you're experiencing arthritis finger pain, your best source of information, of course is your doctor, and you should only act on his or her advice.
