To understand how the Dub came to be first how the Sub started cause to be fair the story about the Sub is a funny as the Dub
So, it started in the mid 80's in Japan. A school teacher in Japan Toru Tsunamitsu (if I'm correct how you spell his name) had a hobby about collecting Ghost Stories and one day he was like "Oh? A lot of them are school related."
So, he asks his students to write all the school related ghost stories they know and pretty soon he would have enough to publish a book about it. And that book was called Gakko No Kaidon (which roughly translates to "School Ghost Stories") about 11 volumes were published and the series became the best seller that it got.well basically everything. It would inspire a mini-series in 1994, a handful of movies, a video game and eventually as all goes.the anime.
The reason most people actually got involved with it is because of the person making the anime. Cause turns out the shitty anime had quite a pedigree. The studio behind it was none other than Pierro and because of the animes they had been known so far such as, "Great Teacher Onizuka" "Yuyu Hakusho" and "Fushigi Ygi" and further into the future they would make great animes such as "Naruto" "Bleach" "Black Clover" and plenty of other very well known and good animes. Series that, basically, made the a shit ton of money.
But! Ghost Stories "pedigree" doesn't stop there! The person directing the anime was none other than Noriyuki Abe of "Great Teacher Onizuka" Doing the music was Kaoru Wada. And the voice cast? Oh man.

AND VOICING THE CAT WAS NONE OTHER THAN FUCKING RYUSEI NAKAO WHO VOICED ONE OF THE MOST ICONIC DRAGON BALL VILLAINS FRIEZA
So to say the least, this show was supposed to make them a SHIT TON of money.they thought.
According to Japanese standards, it was SUPER boring, and I mean B O R I N G
The highest rating it got (according to the Japanese Wikipedia) was a fucking 14 . Now it might not sound bad for you, but do know that Japan does not use the Nielsen System. Instead they have a company called Video Research and in short terms a rating above a 15 (in japan) is considered."good enough." and a rating at or below a 10 is bad
And to remind you, the best rating any episode of Ghost Stories got was a 14. That was Ghost Stories at its PEAK. Their average score was a 12.2.The worst was a 10.6.
For Pierro, Ghost Stories was a HUGE failure, so they just finished the series and tossed it to the trash and never touched it again.
And for the next few years Ghost Stories would just sit there accumulating dirt. If it were not for the boom in Anime Licensures in North America it would have just been forgotten.
But sure enough, there was a huge boom in early and mid 2000s about Anime Licensures in North America. So when finally Japanese things were being released into English, it became a race for Licensure Companies to license and dub any anime they could get their hands on including series that didnt do well.
In 2005, ADV announced that they got the rights to Ghost Stories. Now, normally , when a group like ADV or anyone that makes a dub buys the rights to dub a series the Japanese studio gives the certain guidelines about what to do in the anime.but this time that didnt happen
They just told ADV to not change the name and basic plot and.that was it. Pierro just wanted the series to make money this time.
And this is where the DUB story begins!
The Ghost Stories dub script would be written by its ADR director by the name of Steven Foster. You would know as there is a lovely shout out for him in the last episode. Steven was known for deviating scripts from their direct translation, and so they gave it to him. He just went wild and put anything he thought was funny and rolled with it so it was just him, at times the voice actors would put a line there and there on their own. Which started the rumor that the show was adlibbed but it was him and the rest.
And since we are on the actors, the DUB actors had some pretty well known names as well. People such as Chris Patton (Also voice for Oikawa Tooru from Haikyuu!!), Monica Rial (voice for Stocking from Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt), and Grey Ayres (Also voice for Kaoru Hitachin from Ouran High School Host Club)
So now that we know why this dub was so different from the sub lets get on with those differences.
The dub was so different that it basically changed genres bring from a Supernatural Horror to a Dark Comedy. They did have to keep the plot in, obviously, but the major change was HOW the accidents happened from the original to the dub.
Take the bunny scene for example, in the Sub she had to chant to send him back to the dead.in the dub however..yeah.
They also changed the characters to act more adult but Momoko is the GOLD character in this show, she is the one that had the MOST changed.
In the Sub, she was just a quiet and polite girl, but in the Dub she is a hardcore hardborn Christian.
Many people at first bitched hard about the change (they probably didnt even watch it) but many anime watchers and even NON-anime watchers LOVED it. EVEN THE JAPANESE LOVED IT.
And thats it.thats the story about how Ghost Stories DUB came to be!
