The Committee of Privileges of the Senate has recommended that Opposition Senator Anil Roberts issue an unequivocal and unreserved apology to the President of the Senate, and to the Senate as a whole. Senator Roberts was referred to the Privileges Committee following a live broadcast on his show 'Douglar Politics' in February, criticising Senate President Christine Kangaloo's decision to put him out of the chamber for unruly behaviour. Leader of Government Business, Clarence Rambharat, moved a Motion to adopt the Report of the Committee of Privileges in the Upper House on Wednesday. Senator Rambharat pointed out that live broadcasts on Facebook now rival BBC, NBC and traditional media. He said the weekly show 'Douglar Politics' hosted by Senator Roberts was all about building a brand. Senator Roberts refused several requests to appear before the Privileges Committee and had asked for a virtual meeting. He said he was medically advised that COVID-19 could exacerbate his asthmatic condition. But Independent Senator Amrita Deonarine questioned why Mr. Roberts did not produce a medical certificate. The Senate approved the Motion to adopt the report by a majority, without going to a vote.
